Oil in My Vessel
(Traditional, as learned from North Carolina fiddler Joe Thompson)

I got oil in my vessel
and my lamp’s trimmed and burnin’
Gonna be ready when the bridegroom comes.
I got oil in my vessel,
and my lamp’s trimmed and burnin
Gonna be ready when the bride groom comes.

Must Jesus bear the cross alone
While all the world goes free?
No, there is a cross for everyone,
And there is a cross for me

I got oil in my vessel
and my lamp’s trimmed and burnin'
Gonna be ready when the bridegroom comes
I got oil in my vessel
and my lamp’s trimmed and burnin'
Gonna be ready when the bride groom comes

Amazing grace, how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost but now am found.
I was blind, but now I see.

I got oil in my vessel
and my lamp’s trimmed and burning
Gonna be ready when the bridegroom comes.
I got oil in my vessel, and my lamp’s trimmed and burning

Gonna be ready when the bridegroom comes

LINER NOTES:
I learned this gospel song from the great African American NC fiddler,  Mr. Joe Thompson. I was lucky enough to hear him perform at a small festival one summer and got the opportunity to sit and visit with him after his set. That was a very special day for me and I will never forget it.
